Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
